Honor our veterans this Veterans Day

Today, November 11, 2009, is Veterans' Day when we Americans honor all those who now serve or have served our country in our Armed Forces. I also know that many other countries honor their veterans this day.

Today is a Special Day

Today, August 7, 2009, is the 67th anniversary of the American invasion of Guadalcanal. Sixty-seven years ago, the First Marine Division hit the beaches of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Gavutu Islands in the Solomons. This first major American offensive in World War II began one of the most hard-fought, bloodiest, and intense series of battles in military history. Beginning today and continuing up to and including December 7, 2009, I will commemorate this day and honor all veterans by contributing 10% of the net profits of all sales of autographed copies of my book to a needy veterans’ charity, the Disabled American Veterans.

Celebrating the 4th of July

The 233rd anniversary of America's Declaration of Independence happens in just four days. For Americans, this day is a special one that commemorates the day the Continental Congress gathered in hot, sultry Philadelphia and signed a historically profound document that ultimately led to Great Britain's surrender in Yorktown, Va in 1781. At that surrender, the band played a song entitled, "The World Turned Upside Down," that become more true than anyone present could have known.

I usually celebrate the 4th of July by posting the American flag in front of my house, watching two movies, "1776" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy," have a backyard BBQ, and watch concerts and fireworks' shows on TV. I hope all of you find a way to remember this day and all that it meant to world.

One way that you can celebrate the 4th of July is read a book about American history. One of those just happens [grin] to be mine, Morning of the Rising Sun: The Heroic Story of the Battles for Guadalcanal. You can can find out more about how to purchase your copy by clicking here.

Happy 4th, everyone.

D-Day, June 6

My wife and I have been out almost all day. So, I could not get back to my computer to write about this momentous day in World History. I wanted to so much. Here are my thoughts.

As almost everyone knows, today is the 65th anniversary of the Allied invasion of France that took place on June 6, 1944. Every time I think of this day, I sometimes run out of adjectives to describe this day and what it has meant to so many -- momentous (already used that one), gigantic, overwhelming, powerful, earth-shaking, historic, terrifying, important, plus so many others too many to mention here.

After I visited Normandy in 1994 just before the 50th anniversary with some veterans who were there in 1944 and seeing some of the battlefields (Omaha Beach, Ste. Mere Eglise, Pointe du Hoc, Caen, Cherbourg) and the cemeteries of the fallen (American, British, Canadian, French, and German), I came away with a sense of awe of what happened that day and of all the young men who perished in that horrible conflagration that began that day and extended into the Allied breakout that occurred several months later. I also had a sense of tremendous loss because so many young men ended their lives on this earth and would never realize the fruits of their potential future. I remember being at the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach and feeling a tremendous sadness come over me. It is still with me to this day and will be with me for the rest of my days.

It is good and fitting that we remember what happened 65 years ago today. May the lessons learned since that day about what a deadly business war is never leave us.

These are my thoughts as this day comes to a close. Hope all of you are well.

Celebrating this day

Today is Memorial Day, 2009 in the United States. We Americans commemorate this day by paying homage to those who gave, as Abraham Lincoln said, "their last full measure of devotion" for their families and our country.

I know what I will do today. The Stars and Stripes will fly in the front of my home. I’ll say the Kaddish for all those brave souls who rest in peace in cemeteries and many unknown places around the world. I’ll drink to their lives and their sacrifice to keep our country free and enjoy my family this day with a classic American ritual – a backyard Bar-B-Q of hot dogs, buns, potato salad, mustard, ketchup, chopped onions, and the limited consumption of light adult beverages.

I hope all of you enjoy this day as will my family and I.

Many regards to you all.

Noting a significant date

I admit I have been remiss in not remembering a significant date in the history of the War in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Two days ago, February 9, 2009, was the 66th anniversary of the end of the Battles for Guadalcanal. On February 9, 1943, the Americans raised their flag to signify they had secured Guadalcanal from Japanese occupation. The Japanese Navy evacuated the last Japanese soldier alive from that island one day before. Thus, one of the bloodiest and hardest-fought six-month periods in military history ended.

Let us remember all those brave soldiers, sailors, and marines who never left that place and rest in peace and honor in the soil and beneath the waters surrounding that island.
